School Books for Africa

A local charity, Tools with a Mission (TWAM) runs a School Book Project in Ipswich which collects redundant text books, reading books, reference and information books. Books can be donated either by local schools or by individuals.

A team of volunteers checks that the donated books are up to date, clean and relevant, then allocates them to schools in East and Southern Africa where the curriculum still follows a mainly English model. For the foreseeable future these schools will not have sufficient funds to buy enough locally produced books. Therefore second hand books from the UK help to fill the gap and make it possible for children to get into the reading habit.

What sort of books are needed???

  • Books for all ages from pre-school to A-level.
  • Books should be clean and strong, no graffiti
  • Books should be relatively modern, up to 15 years old.
  • Sets of text books. Please include Answer books!
  • Sets of readers, story books, novels for teenagers, picture books for pre-school.
  • Information/resource books on all the usual topics.
  • Dictionaries & other reference books.

Getting the books to Ipswich.
TWAM can arrange collection from schools supplying big quantities of books. Please phone Cindy on 01473 210220.

For smaller quantities of books please contact Peter Howard, peterbookproject@twam.co.uk for advice about local drop-off point.

THANK YOU FOR KEEPING THIS PROJECT GOING

Do you want some French text books (good condition with teacher’s books and photocopy worksheets) called Tricolore?

In a few weeks I’ll probably have a couple of boxes of arithmetic & maths books (and possibly other subjects) that are due to be binned. They’re in reasonable condition but perhaps don’t quite meet your specification (e.g. some over 15 years old, some with slight graffiti, some slightly dog-eared, some none of those). It seems a shame to bin them. Suggestions?

    Hi,
I am Head of Science at a Girls Independent school in Ascot, Berkshire.
We will have some science textbooks that you might like to send to Africa. I am not sure of the quantity yet.
Please would you tell me the closest drop off point and give me an indication of how large a quantity you would pick up from us. I will ask other HODs if they have books suitable for your scheme. As you are probably aware the GCSEs have changed and are changing.

    Thank you,
    Angela Bushill (Head of Science)

    Dear Sir or Madam,

At our school we have some books that can be collected. However, the number is not large enough to warrant a special pick up. I’m hoping that maybe you have other London pick-ups to which you could add our college?

Please let us know what you think.

    Kind regards,

I am looking for old school books for my rural school, in Omusati region northern parts of Namibia. Specific subjects are: english, mathematics, science butall kinds of books are also welcomed. At this school there is no electricity and my hope and plan is to establish a resources centre to encourage the learners to develop a culture of reading after schools.

Ottilie, I have passed your enquiry onto TWAM, an organisation that collects and sends books out to Africa.
    Best wishes
